Periodontal Scaling Is A Common Procedure

Periodontal scaling is a common procedure that any dentist can do, and will do often, as it is an excellent line of defense against gingivitis and decay. It is typically done with metal tools that resemble hooks, though there are some newer models that are less painful and are safer to use. The idea behind the treatment is to remove plaque or calculus before it has a chance to eat away at tooth enamel and do permanent damage to the mouth.

It’s one of the simplest forms of treatment that a professional learns, and typically involves using a metal scaler to scrape away plaque and calculus. Calculus is mineralized plaque, and tends to form after the plaque has sat around for at least 24 hours. Once it solidifies, brushing and flossing cannot handle it anymore, and a procedure like periodontal scaling is required to get rid of it.

There are two forms of the treatment. The first is done above the gum line, and the second is done beneath the gum line, and uses more delicate tools. For those that already have some form of gum disease or tooth decay, or for those that are sensitive to pain, the procedure can be distressing and may require a numbing agent or sedative to get through it. Fortunately, there are newer devices that are making the treatment much easier to handle.

Chief among these new tools is the laser scaler. Instead of using the mechanical strength of metal, which can damage tissue if used incorrectly, or irritate the gum or tooth, laser devices focus a concentrated beam of energy to precisely burn away plaque and calculus. It is much less painful, and causes less bleeding, so it is perfect for those who have trouble staying calm in the examination chair.
